Our traineeship program has been designed for individuals: (*Eligibility conditions apply)

  • wanting to start a career in education and care and has not yet obtained previous study or experience in the sector
  • has completed up to a Certificate III in Childcare and wants to upskill and gain experience.

This flexible program is perfect for individuals who want to earn an income, study and gain experience all at the same time on a part-time basis.

You may have recently finished high school, completed Certificate II or III in Childcare and want to upskill, looking to get back into the workforce in a new industry or want to start a new career. About the Traineeship

You will be supported to complete your Diploma of School Aged Care. Study is self-paced so whether you choose to take 3 months or 18 months to complete the course, it’s completely in your own time. You may be eligible for full financial support for your Diploma study. 

Employed on a part-time basis and working as a Service Assistant or Service Coordinator in Before, After School Care and Vacation Care, you will receive a part-time wage working anything between 13 – 37 hours per week, plus one hour per week of paid study time with full support and training provided by our highly experienced Extend Program Managers.

This program requires a commitment of a minimum of 13 hours per week plus one hour of paid study time from the trainee. Further support is provided by the course trainers with placement and onsite visits done at the service. 

This flexible program provides you with the opportunity to choose your own hours and days you would like to work. 

The traineeship is currently offered in Victoria only. Nevertheless, we want to hear from you as we have fantastic opportunities available in other states which have different qualifications and experience requirements to work in-service with the children. Frequently Asked Questions

I haven’t been part of the workforce in many years. Would Extend still be interested in considering me?
Yes, Extend welcome applicants from all walks of life. We value the experience and wisdom that different applicants can bring to Extend.

I have no experience or qualifications in the childcare industry – can I apply?
Yes, our traineeship is open to anyone that has no previous experience in childcare or education settings and has not obtained qualifications in this sector. If you are looking to start a new career and are willing to commit to ongoing study and employment in our Before and After School Care services, apply to our program today!

I have a certificate II or certificate III in childcare, can I apply to the program?
Yes, if you are looking to upskill and complete the Diploma of School Aged Care and gain experience at the same time, you can apply to the program. 

How many days/hours per week would I be expected to work? Will I get paid and how much?
The traineeship program requires a commitment of at least 13 hours of paid employment each week including 1 hour of paid study time. You can work anything between 13 – 37 hours per week. You can choose your hours and the days you work.

For those undertaking the traineeship program, we offer a part-time rate between $20.50 – $26.00.

What does my role as an assistant and coordinator involve?
As an Educator working in Before, After School Care and Vacation Care, your role will be to provide an engaging, inclusive and supportive learning experience for children attending care in a safe environment. You will implement the daily program, exciting activities, taking children outside for outdoor experiences and play and serve a healthy range of snacks. Our educators form close relationships within the school setting with the children, their parents and families and the wider school community.

What information do you need to obtain from me? Do I need an up-to-date resume to apply?
To apply for the traineeship program we require an expression of interest and to find out a little more about you as an individual, such as your location, your availability, why you would like to work for Extend and in the OSHC industry and if you would be committed to study.
